A huge amount of time is spent on studying the game plan, optimizing positioning and optimizing physical preparation thanks to advanced data analytics. <strong>Statistics, figures, and mathematics are the key factors of decision-making at most levels.<\/strong> Teams are surrounded by doctors, physiotherapists, analysts, and specialized coaches in order to be as efficient as possible and to optimize every detail. Players are pushed to their limits, and their physical abilities are developed like never before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-98d14e62c9ffcec3d9615ece57ac457c\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-top-left-radius:0px;border-top-right-radius:0px;border-bottom-left-radius:0px;border-bottom-right-radius:0px\"><blockquote><p>Nowadays, matches place much more emphasis on tactics. Consequently, it&#8217;s also the one with the most money in circulation, and therefore inevitably follows similar patterns to other major capitalist industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The business of football: the big data arms race | FT Scoreboard\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A_pxpJgY7V4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f3a576baa295192ff98a8980bbc0c502\"><blockquote><p>Football inevitably follows similar patterns to other major capitalist industries.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1aca93a515bead3d073832c9506550e7\" style=\"color:#b00533;font-size:26px\">Algorithmic Capitalism at the expense of beauty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0a639a3cea55d8a877b88a967e5a4167 wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, <strong>football today isn&#8217;t so different from the world around us: from our political, economic, and social realities.<\/strong> There has to be a winner. You have to prove you&#8217;re better than the other guy. You have to defend yourself on the pitch. <strong>Each of these realities being subject to and propelled by algorithms.<\/strong> It&#8217;s the spirit of liberalism and capitalism, but it&#8217;s also the spirit of competition, and therefore, in a way, the very essence of sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8e467a0ff3cc8fee599991022ebfb8b6 wp-block-paragraph\"> <strong>&#8222;In the digital age, the algorithm has become a primary instrument of control and surveillance. It structures our attention, commodifies our behavior, and directs digital capitalism.&#8220;<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 <strong>Christian Fuchs<\/strong>, <em>Digital Capitalism<\/em> (Routledge, 2022)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e68a083f95bf88af391d6fa8ec8c5719 wp-block-paragraph\">And when we trace the history of sport \u2014 going back to ancient Greece \u2014 we realize that it was also considered something beautiful, artistic, almost magical. A bit like a cult. (Obviously, this wasn&#8217;t the only function of sport at that time; no fantasy here.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-820e797539cd10f788a000f0afd702f8 wp-block-paragraph\">This makes me think about the pursuit of beauty, which I believe is also lamented by many people in other fields. For example, in art or architecture: it&#8217;s often said that today&#8217;s buildings, even if they are more modern, more efficient, more practical, no longer have the same aesthetic focus. <strong>Everything is designed for speed, functionality, and efficiency. It&#8217;s a fairly popular, even majority, opinion. Yet, these same people are sometimes able to justify the way our society functions, to justify the world we live in:<strong> a world where competition is omnipresent, where capitalism is imposed by force, and where innovation is dictated by profit.<\/strong> A world that leads us to adopt an excessive attitude, where we must always outdo others, exceed our capabilities at the expense of our bodies and minds, push beyond our limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cce397046c2efdced98ff9ef307b0999 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWe live in a world of communication, everyone gets information about everyone else. There is universal comparison and you don&#8217;t just compare yourself with the people next door, you compare yourself to people all over the world and with what is being presented as the decent, proper and dignified life. It&#8217;s the crime of humiliation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 <strong>Zygmunt Bauman<\/strong>, interview for <em>The Guardian<\/em>, 2003<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0117a3d4fecf178267bc8ede69c90218 wp-block-paragraph\">And this discourse perpetuates the myth that the pursuit of profit is the only way to achieve progress and improve our society. We are told: <em>\u201cWhy are you complaining that someone else has more money than you? If you can\u2019t achieve it, it\u2019s because you haven\u2019t tried hard enough. You haven\u2019t had the drive and determination to bring your ideas to fruition.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7095417182b3e75538074d90456e6790 wp-block-paragraph\">All of this is deeply contradictory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-825cc03044c181375caef94835523a57\" style=\"color:#b00533;font-size:26px\">Is there a &#8222;things were better before&#8220; syndrome among football fans?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, I was tempted to say yes. But in reality, no. Fans do say &#8222;things were better before,&#8220; they agree that something has changed, that some sparkle has been lost\u2026 and yet, they are unable to recognize that the neo-liberal capitalist system reproduces the exact same destruction process that we see in football everywhere else. All of this is symptomatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e67fe392b576e4fcf4e33ca5118f0582 wp-block-paragraph\">It is the destruction of the expression of freedom, that freedom which was expressed through the game, through the player himself, through creativity. It is also the destruction of human cohesion, of cooperation, in favor of unbridled competition, without any checks and balances, without limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fd9b5f3ff86c04479aa6e79ec15359b6\"><blockquote><p>Fans agree that something has changed, that some sparkle has been lost\u2026 and yet, they are unable to recognize that the neo-liberal capitalist system reproduces the exact same destruction process that we see in football everywhere else.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-35a11c7d0b960b0f340ce70068261fba wp-block-paragraph\">Please note, my point is not to condemn competition itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-473d03b7109c058a8e64e63424487c71 wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, I criticize the way competition encroaches on creativity. <strong>When competition no longer encourages creation for its own sake, but rather creation to crush opponents or competitors, it becomes pernicious.<\/strong> A football club owner no longer seeks to win for the beauty of the game, to thrill spectators and fans, but to increase the value of an asset portfolio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-151d5a364a2aa23ef135a9c5f0681caa wp-block-paragraph\">The same applies to shareholders or CEOs: the primary motivation behind their decisions is not to create something new or revolutionary, but rather to seek profit in order to continue to exist\u2026 while causing the demise of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIt is creative apperception more than anything else that makes the individual feel that life is worth living.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f66f60390a2bf92afd8e8f0256ce01ea wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 <strong>Donald Winnicott<\/strong>, <em>Playing and Reality<\/em>, chapter 5, \u201cCreativity and Its Origins\u201d, 1971.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-14fda29b6242b96c6ddd5c35d5fcfa48\" style=\"color:#b00533;font-size:26px\"><strong>What happens then to the health and well-being of the players?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0d9c084837c4caa2bce0515e857445da wp-block-paragraph\">When institutions decide to increase the number of matches and games to boost their revenue through television rights, players find themselves performing relentlessly, pushing their bodies to their limits. This leads to more injuries, more psychological distress\u2026 and, consequently, poorer performances and a less exciting spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fbc247a01bafccc2b52931088d03e055 wp-block-paragraph\">Progress is rapid, yes. Productivity gains have been immense in recent years. One might think that well-being has only increased since we work less than before. And yet, <strong>we are witnessing waves of depression, a loss of meaning, and waves of workers affected by mental and psychological disorders.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2351c2772aa8cbb5a0ede3c6ec550b15 wp-block-paragraph\">Competition, supposedly bringing innovation and diversity, certainly brings a lot of innovation\u2026 but very little diversity. <strong>Excessive competition in a system that rewards financial speculation imposes profit as the driving force of creativity and produces uniformity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-07fd6a799325122f9de9a166303835fa wp-block-paragraph\">This isn&#8217;t about saying, &#8222;Let&#8217;s put an end to capitalism and competition.&#8220; It seems to me that, at present, it is impossible for us to collectively escape capitalism. However, questioning the current iteration of capitalism and <strong>its production of uniformity, its lack of originality, its restriction of self-expression, its restriction of creativity for the sake of creativity, the borders it puts on our imagination and thus its replacement of beauty and art by efficient, profitable, marketable products<\/strong> and asking whether it is possible to transcend it for the rebirth of imagination and for the common good seems more than necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why do fans think that football was better before?
